Falcons soar to #5 in poll
It was a thrilling three-point series last weekend for UW-River
Falls, which recorded a win and a tie against visiting #3 St.
Norbert. The Falcons hard work did not go unnoticed as the
Falcons jumped seven spots in the national rankings to number
five. It was a memorable series featuring ccomebacks by both
teams, providing a wild ride for those in attendance.
In Friday night's game, UWRF scored four times in the opening
period and led 5-0 in the second. National power St. Norbert
was not about to give up, rattling off the game's next three goals
and setting thiings up for a dramatic comeback. They peppered
Falcon goalie Scott Lewan with 13 shots in the second period and 14
in the third, but the sophomore stood tall. He finished the
game with 33 saves on 36 shots, several of which came on two clutch
penalty kills in the third period with the score 5-3 and the Green
Knights pressing.
In Saturday's 5-5 tie, St. Norbert shot out to a 2-0 lead after the
first and led 4-0 early in the third period. But UW-River
Falls stormed back, tying the game 4-4 in under a ten minute
span. At 16:15 Blake Huppert scored his second goal of the
period to give the Falcons a 5-4 lead and send Hunt Arena into a
frenzy. Cody Keefer saved the day for the Green Knights,
tying the game at 5-5 with 2:27 left to play. The scoreless
overtime period featured a St. Norbert power play and 56 minutes in
penalties.
UW-River Falls takes its #5 ranking to the ice against UW-Stevens
Point this weekend at Hunt Arena. The Pointers are coming off
a tie and loss to #13 UW-Superior.
St. Norbert, now ranked 8th in country, travels back west to #13
UW-Eau Claire in another tough road series.
