Men's All-NCHA Team Announced

The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association announced today that St. Norbert senior forward Johan Ryd (Sodertalje, Sweden) has been voted Player of the Year by the coaches of the Men’s Conference.  Ryd (pronounced ROO-D) ranked first in the NCHA in overall and conference scoring while leading the Green Knights to their third consecutive regular season championship and a first round bye in the playoffs.

"Johan is the physical and emotional leader of our team," said St. Norbert head coach Tim Coghlin.  "He is our captain, leading scorer, top defensive player, leading shot blocker and hardest worker on the ice and in the classroom.”

Through the regular season Ryd has recorded 33 total points, 25 of those coming in NCHA competition.  His three game-winning goals tie for first in the league; two of the goals came in back-to-back games in a critical series with UW-Stout.  Ryd had multiple points in ten games this year and scoring streaks of five, five and six games.  St. Norbert had 13 games this season that ended in ties or were decided by two goals or less; Ryd contributed at least one point in nine of those games.

Ryd’s rise to the highest honor of the NCHA is a remarkable one.  As a freshman he played in just three games.  After an off-season of hard work, he came back to De Pere and posted nearly a point per game – two of those points coming in an NCAA semifinal victory over Oswego State.  As a junior he refused to let up, notching 28 points while helping St. Norbert win the 2011 NCAA title.  And in this his senior season, Ryd saved his best for last: he posted career-highs in goals, assists and points.

Also announced today, the league coaches voted Mark Wick of St. Scholastica 2012 Coach of the Year.  This is the second award for Wick in the past four years, as he also won it in 2009.  Wick guided the Saints to a 14-7-4 regular season regular record and a second-place finish in the NCHA.  The Saints gained the number-2 seed for the playoffs with clutch wins in the last month of the season, including a pair of road wins on the last weekend of league play.

Along with Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, the All-NCHA team, honorable mention selections and All-Rookie team were announced.  Both St. Norbert and St. Scholastica had three players voted All-NCHA.  Three players were voted to their second consecutive All-NCHA team: St. Norbert forward Ryd, UW-Eau Claire forward Jordan Singer (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and UW-Superior defenseman Jeff Forsythe (Campbell River, BC).  St. Scholastica forward Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Man.), in his senior season, accomplished the All-NCHA feat after two straight years appearing on the honorable mention team.  St. Norbert goaltender David Jacobson (Janesville, Wis.) was the lone freshman on this year’s All-NCHA team.

The All-Rookie team featured three players who were also voted All-NCHA or honorable mention.  St. Norbert’s Jacobson was All-NCHA while teammate Cullen Bradshaw (Medicine Hat, AB) and UW-River Falls’ defenseman George Malliaras (Palos Hills, Ill.) were honorable mention.  Bradshaw led all rookies with 25 points in the regular season; Malliaras and UW-Stout’s Jordan Tredinnick (Onalaska, Wis.) tied for second in scoring by defensemen with 16 points each.
