NCHA Weekly Release: Playoff Edition
SAINT PAUL (February 28, 2012) – While overtime showed its
face multiple times in the Peters Cup Quarterfinals, it failed to
make an appearance in last Saturday’s Semifinals.
That’s not to say there wasn’t any drama or
excitement.
In Green Bay St. Norbert held off UW-Eau Claire 2-0 and in Duluth
UW-Stevens Point defeated host St. Scholastica 5-1.
The Green Knights got a first period goal from Marian Fiala and
then capped the game off with an empty-net goal by Johan Ryd.
Goaltender David Jacobson made 19 saves for the playoff
shutout. The Blugolds’ Brandon Stephenson recorded 28
saves on 29 shots.
UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the first and second periods and
got 40 saves from freshman goalie Brandon Jaeger.
St. Norbert defeated UW-Stevens Point twice during the regular
season, 4-1 and 8-3; the Pointers beat the Green Knights once, 5-1
in Stevens Point. UW-Stevens Point is 6-2-1 over its past
nine games and is led in scoring by Kyle Heck (20-7-27). The
Pointers are making their first appearance in the NCHA title game
since 2000.
St. Norbert has lost just once in its past 11 games and enters the
championship game on a four-game win streak. The Green
Knights – led in scoring by NCHA Player of the Year Johan Ryd
– are making their third straight appearance in the title
game.
Three of the past four Peters Cup Championship games have
been decided by one goal.
