Freshman Schultz Voted Women's Top Player

UW-Superior freshmen Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn. / Morris) has been voted Player of the Year in the NCHA Women’s Conference by the league coaches, the NCHA announced today.  In just her first season of collegiate hockey, Schultz established herself as a premier goal-scorer, notching 21 goals in 25 games for the Yellowjackets.

“As a freshman, to come in and be the hardest worker, is remarkable,” said UW-Superior Head Coach Dan Laughlin.  “We wanted her to come in and score goals, and she has given us a huge boost in that department.  She’s not the flashiest player, but she has a nose for the net that is just very rare for a freshman.”

Schultz’s statistics are worthy of the NCHA’s highest honor.  She put up 28 points in her 25 regular season games.  Twenty-one of those points came on goals, and seven of her goals were game-winners – tied for first in the nation as of this release.  Six of her game-winners came in NCHA competition, which is quite impressive given the rugged conference schedule.  Schultz posted five multi-goal games this season and ten multi-point games.  She sits tied for sixth in the country in points per game by a rookie.

Schultz’s efforts, no doubt, contributed to UW-Superior pulling away and clinching the number-two seed for the upcoming O’Brien Cup Playoffs.  The Yellowjackets will host St. Norbert having won eight of their past 11 games.  Schultz has ten goals in that span.

It was a sweep for UW-Superior as Laughlin was voted Coach of the Year by the NCHA coaches.  Laughlin guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-7-3 regular season record and a national ranking of tenth.  UW-Superior has been in the top ten most of the season and recently handed then-number-five Gustavus Adolphus its first loss of the year.  This is the fourth Coach of the Year award for Laughlin, who also won it in 2008, 2006 and 2004.  He has coached at UW-Superior since 2000.

Players from Adrian and UW-Superior highlighted the All-NCHA team, which was also released today.  Both teams sent a forward, defenseman and goaltender to the all-conference group: Adrian’s Olivia Rork (Wayne, Mich.), Kelly Salis (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and Brittany Zeches (Westland, Mich.) and UW-Superior’s Schultz, Kaiti Graham (Middleville, Mich.) and Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba).  Salis and UW-Stevens Point’s Erin Marvin (Shoreview, Minn.) both were named to their third All-NCHA team.  UW-Superior’s Schultz and St. Scholastica’s Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland) both earned the conference honor in their freshman seasons.

Seven players were named to the second-annual All-Rookie team.  Adrian and St. Scholastica each sent a pair of skaters to the team: Hannah McGowan (Redford, Mich.) and Courtney Millar (Newport, Mich.) for the Lady Bulldogs and Waidacher and Alex Blair (Drake, SK) for the Saints.  Also named were UW-Superior’s Schultz, Concordia-Wisconsin defenseman Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) and Lake Forest goalie Jenna Brankin (Cary, Ill.).
