Player of the Week: Marian's Alexander
SAINT PAUL (January 10, 2012) -- Marian University freshman goaltender Amanda Alexander (Sault Ste. Marie, ON / Soo Wildcats) has been selected Player of the Week in the NCHA Women's Conference for the week ending January 9. Alexander made 78 saves last weekend in a tie and loss to visiting Augsburg.
Alexander's 46-save performance last Saturday propelled the Sabres to a 2-2 tie with the Auggies. The draw was much-needed for Marian as it snapped a losing streak of 11 games. Alexander made 23 saves in a busy second period and stopped all five shots on goal in the overtime.
In the Sunday rematch, Alexander responded with double-digit saves in each period in a 3-1 loss. She totaled 32 for the game, raising her season tally to 367 - tops in the NCHA.
Around the Rinks ...
Deardorff Perfect: UW-River Falls goaltender Melissa Deardorff recorded her first shutout of the season when she stopped all 28 shots in a 5-0 win over Bethel last Saturday. It was just the second time all season the Falcons have been outshot (the other was December 6 at Gustavus, a 1-1 tie).
Mid-Week Action: Tonight it's UW-Stevens Point
visiting MIAC rival St. Thomas ... And on Wednesday, the Tommies
travel to UW-Eau Claire to complete back-to-back non-conference
matchups.
